Taughannock Falls State Park New York

Taughannock Falls State Park is one of the outstanding natural landmarks of the Northeast. Taughannock Falls plunges 215 feet over once rocky escarpments that tower nearly 400 feet above the couloir. Gorge and hem trails offer spectacular views from above the cascade and from below at the end of the couloir trail. Campgrounds and cabins overlook Cayuga Lake, with a marina, boat launch, and sand hard. A multi-use trail– hiking, cross-country skiing– winds past sledding pitches and natural skating ponds.

Taughannock Falls falls and the central point of Taughannock Falls State Park, near the western shore of Cayuga Lake, in the Finger Lakes Region, 8 miles (13 km) northwest of Ithaca in west-central New York, U.S. The name originates either from that of the Delaware Indian principal Taughannock or from the Delaware word taghkanic (“great fall in the forestland”).

Taughannock Falls State Park is formed by a creek entering the lake and is girdled by a glen with walls some 400 feet (120 meters) deep. The cataract has a drop of 215 feet (66 meters), one of the loftiest east of the Rocky Mountains, and is 25 bases (8 meters) more advanced than Niagara Falls (the American Falls) but with a lower volume. Thick spray rising from the bottom of the glen frequently shrouds the lower part of the cataract in mist.
